Building Blocks of an Automated Testing Strategy

Aliya Khan

Automated Testing StrategyIn software testing, test automation is acknowledged to promote both speed and quality. It also plays a critical role in maintaining quality during fast release cycles. Automated testing tools can run automated scripts that allow testers to cut-down the time spent on performing repetitive tasks. However, even though automated testing tools allow testing teams to reduce the total number of test cases, many companies fail to get the desired results from test automation. This is because test automation is only as effective as it is designed to be. This means that spending time on creating an automated testing strategy is equally important. Here’s what you should keep in mind while developing a test automation strategy that will enhance quality and drive revenue.

The Right Mix of Skill-sets in the Team

For a test automation strategy to be successful, you need to ensure that your team has people with the right expertise. Your team should include people who understand automated software testing and are familiar with the use of automated testing tools as well as people who have thorough domain knowledge. You also need people who can continuously align and re-align the strategy with the business objectives.

Selection of the Automated Testing Tool

While no automation testing tool can ensure the success of an automated testing strategy, selecting an appropriate tool is one of the critical factors that affect the overall process. Ensure that the tool is script-less, easy-to-use, and efficient enough to keep up with constant changes in the AUT.

Select the Right Test Cases

Aiming for 100% test automation is a waste of time and effort. The key to a successful test automation strategy lies in selecting the right test cases for automation. Test cases that are ideal for automation include – business critical test cases that should pass in every build, test cases that are executed repeatedly, test cases that are tedious and time-consuming for manual execution.

Setting up of the Test Environment

Setting up the right test environment is critical. The key here is to set up a test environment that is a close replica of the production environment and includes the hardware and software configuration.

Execution of Test Cases

The automated testing strategy should specify the execution process of the test cases. Once the test cases have been executed each test case should be given a status- Pass/Fail/ Not Executed. This will help in defining the success criteria for each of the test cases.

Maintenance of Test Suite

The automation test scripts require modification as newer functionalities are added to the application. In some cases, even new scripts need to be added. The test suite also needs to be upgraded with each release. For this reason, the test suite should be easy to maintain to improve the effectiveness of the automated testing strategy.

In conclusion, the key to a successful of automated testing strategy lies in selecting and implementing the right automated testing tool, honing the skill-sets of testers, setting the right expectations, and continuously enhancing the test suite.
